camp sites/london info

i am new to this camping lark and having recently got live8 tickets thought it might be a cheaper way to stay nearby.

i have found some camp sites at epping forest and mill hill (end of A1) and wondered if anyone knew of any others, or info on whether these are nice. i am coming off the M40 so somewhere near there would be easiest, i want a camp site, near tube/train station and cheap parking available near the station, or walking distance from camp site.

how far into london can i go before the congestion charge starts, is it city of london (us northerners dont really listen when its mentioned on the news)?

I know i am asking a lot but i know you lot are very clever :D

    jen_jen,

You might get more replies on the travel board, so I hope that you don't mind if I move it over there.

  • I think the Crystal palace one sounds the best for you. Good post, I never thought about camping in London before!

there's a campsite in the lee valley in leyton - i think it's the most central one (zone 3) & not too far from the tube station.

    Lee Valley Campsite
    Temple Mills Lane
    Leyton
    E15 2EN
    Tel: 020 8536 0959

It's the wrong side of London from the M40 - but is the most central - and very easy to Hyde park as leyton is on the central line- so you're straight there.

congestion charge is only in operation Mon-Fri 0700 - 1830 -and you have to go right into the centre to be charged. Even the inner inner ring road isn't included in the congestion charge.

In a bullet proof vest with the windows all closed, I'll see you soon

Not sure if it's any help but..............
there's one in Abbey Wood - SE London. Within walk of a rail station which goes into London Bridge, Waterloo, Charing Cross & Cannon Street. Also, you can link for Docklands Light Railway at Greenwich, I think.

One problem might be that it's a Caravanning & Camping Club site.

Believe me when I say you dont want to camp out here. The trains down't run that late this end of the line so if you dont get out of london by 11.30 pm your stuck to get a night bus that takes 3 @#*$+%! hours to Woodford Wells and then walk into Debden (or get a taxi if your flush).

Lee valley is a good spot. As been said its in zone 3 so cheaper travel (if your in Zone 5 you pay for zone 6 as well, even if you dont use it)
I have to say, dont camp by your self. Make friends with people around you (if you are by yourself) as lee valley can be a bit of a trouble spot
Let us know where you end up!

(If you got a ticket free you can stay at mine for free.... hehe....can't blame a girl for trying)
I remember when this was just a little website! :money:
  • We have camped at a site in Chertsey before - think it's Camping & Caravanning Club but the do allow non-members to stay. It was pretty convenient, I think, but we were visiting friends in Sunbury, rather than 'doing' London.
