Another suggestion is a Ceanothus

Just to say that Camellias like Acid soil and you would lose flowers if you had to keep cutting them back.
It is worth asking for advice at your local plant nursery and also to look at what is doing well in your neighbour's gardens. Thanks for that. Yes, not bad... :-)They just don't have the lucious thick plump leaves of the Camie.I guess a visit to a garden centre is in order :-)

camellia flowers are susceptible to frost damage so need a protected spot unless you live where frost is not a problem.1

Frost shouldn't be an issue here in the SW, and it'll be against the house, south-facing.This is mil's, on ther north side - thriving. But will too much direct sun not work for me?0

A wee curveball...I'm also thinking I could go black-leaved. Any beauts out there?!0

A visit to a local garden centre. The evergreens that struck me with their nice rich foliage were:Sarcococca Hookeriana 'Purple Stem'. (Forgot to take full shot...):Sarcococca 'Confusa':And Pittosporum Tobira-Nana:Will be going under a window on a white-painted bunglow. Anyone got any experiance of these? Thanks.0

Griselinia also has plump evergreen leaves- the variegated is fine, but no flowers or berries.
The only pittosporum that I know has small leaves- not very lush or plump (it's the one that used to used by florists ) but the golden ball variety looks good
If it's going under a window then you don't want anything too vigorous or you will always be chopping at the new lush growth. I would be looking carefully at the maximum height advice.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
