hi,
i am sure in the past if using the app and choosing to pay your credit card using a debit card the process always used to stay within the app, today i went to pay and it opens a window and leaves the app.

i wanted to make a 2nd payment to same credit card using a different debit card but payment failed saying "you already made the maximum number of payments by debit card today", it would allow me to send payment direct from a Halifax current account. you can only make one debit card payment per day?

is this how its always been? none of it rings a bell with me.

They made some changes to the payment methods - at a guess about 5 years ago. Making it harder to pay off cash withdrawals immediately to save interest.

I can recollect hitting the limit for debit card payments on one occasion. I've always been able to make bank transfers from another bank so I gave up on debit card payments after that.

Halifax (and Lloyds) have had this limit of only allowing one payment by debit card a day for some considerable time. You can make a further payment with the same or a different debit card anytime after midnight. They only allow a total of about 7 debit card payments during an account month.
For the last several years the android app has always transferred the payment out of the app into the online system for any debit card payments.
Interestly Halifax allow payments by the BOS app. The same restrictions apply on the number of debit card payments.
I have successfully used debit card payments to the clarity card of 1p or 1.01p for some years very successfully but have not needed to use this facility recently. I usually pay by Halifax Reward Debit Card presently for the £5s
