Does motor legal protection include defence of claims for uninsured losses against policy holder?

Question about Motor Legal Protection: one of its main purposes is recovery of uninsured losses, but does it provide cover in the opposite situation, i.e. defence if someone claims uninsured losses from the policy holder? I understand this may vary between policies but I'm interested in finding out if this is generally part of this type of cover or not.

What uninsured losses did you have in mind?

No. Your liabilities to other people are covered by the third party liability section of your insurance which all motor insurance policies have to cover by law. If someone takes you to court your own insurers will manage the defence on your behalf and will either negotiate a settlement or send solicitors to defend the claim as they see fit.

So there's no need for MLP to cover either your or the claimants legal costs in a defensive case, as these are already covered by all insurance po to iciea as standard.

    Its is sole purpose really.

Its uninsured loss for them but its an insured loss to you, your motor insurers would cover it under the third party liability section of the policy in the same way as insured losses - if you are at fault if the TP is insured or not is an irrelevance

The other party's valid "uninsured losses" are things that your insurer would still pay, not things YOU have to pay personally.

Yes, indeed. I added "main" as I noticed some of these policies include extras like prosecution defence and disputes when buying/selling/hiring vehicles, but these aren't the main reason for buying MLP.

Your motor insurer may well decide to pay for counsel for your defence if they feel there are reasonable prospects of success and it would have an impact on liability  even if you dont have LE cover. But yes, there are some fringe benefits with some LE policies.
