Brussels airlines customer service

Trying to cancel outward flight only from Birmingham to Brussels due to sudden bereavement  of close family member. I wish to retain return flight.. Customer service says I have to wait for a supervisor to phone. Despite daily calls and emails, still waiting after 10 days. In the meantime I had 1 call from New York, claiming to be sending an email which never arrived. Yesterday had someone from Kenya phone claiming to be from the airline, and I ended up being scammed, luckily marks and spencer credit card stopped the payments. Brussels airlines response to this traumatic experience on the phone’You have to wait for a supervisor to phone’
Any suggestions how to resolve?
Jet 2 managed to cancel an outward flight and retain return flight for me last month in a 3 minute call!

With a round trip ticket then cancelling the outbound leg normally automatically cancels the return.

If they agree to transfer the booking to the single return leg then it is likely that a supervisor will need to intervene and make manual changes.

You'll just have to keep your fingers crossed they'll permit the change and wait for that call.

Wouldn't it be simpler to cancel both flights and book a new Brussels - Birmingham flight?

I initially thought that too, but presumably the currently booked flights aren't actually changeable/refundable, or maybe the prices have shot up?
