Toyo
Proxes Comfort PXCM 87VXLS ?
What are these like in wet and dry conditions ?
They are rated as long lasting and quiet but I have read various things - some say good in wet - some rate them as poor
They are cheap (£75 for
185/55VR16)
Compare to Continentals
If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

As far as I'm aware, Toyo are generally regarded as a "pretty decent" mid-range brand, certainly good enough for most "ordinary" drivers who want a decent level of safety without breaking the bank. Many, many years ago I needed tyres, my local independent tyre place recommended Toyo, I'd never heard of them at the time - the guy told me that's what he used on his own car. I was a bit sceptical (yeah, he would say that, wouldn't he), but actually I was very pleased with them. Decent enough grip in most conditions, and they certainly lasted well.Of course it depends to a great extent on the type of driving you do - are you an "enthusiastic" driver, or more "sedate" ? To take things to extremes, you'd want rather better tyres on a Ferrari than you would on a Fiesta - at a cost, of course. But I think Toyo are a reasonable bet for the average "man in the street", so to speak.2

They will be perfectly safe in the rain. Whilst they aren't considered a premium brand Toyo are now OEM for some manufacturers, a neighbour has a new Mazda CX5 fitted with them.
I had an Audi A2 with a rare tyre size, only Dunlop or Toyo Proxes, I had no hesitancy fitting Toyos. We currently have Toyo Celsius all season tyres fitted to a Yaris and have had no issues.1 -

They're good value. Considered mid-range but one of the better, and cheaper midrange tyres
In a 2023 test linked to above, they got a 'recommended'. Not as good as a Conti Premium 7 except when it comes to noise, comfort and rolling resistance - all things that might be important to you.
From an mse perspective they are going to be half the price of the contis. I use this site to check prices across a few suppliers

I ran Toyos for a while and I was constantly replacing tyres because of sidewall blisters. The tyre places blamed pothole damage, but I have rarely had sidewall damage on any other brand. Since I stopped using Toyos, over 10 years ago, I have had only one more instance of a sidewall blister.1

They are OEM for Mazda CX5. I found that they were reliable and hard wearing when I had the car.0
