Help reading my gas bill

I recently received my gas statement for the year but they hadn’t taken off the payments I make monthly which totalled £1047. I complained and was told they would recalculate it and send a new one. I have now received three other bills with different amounts. One saying I was in credit by £147. Another saying I’m in deficit of £33 and now another saying I’m in deficit by £344. The readings are the same from what I can see. I had a backbilling credit which has been taken off, not sure what that is.
Can anyone help me to workout which bill is correct please.

    More info please

When was the last time BG billed you including your DD ?    How many DD were missing and what was the total (Edit reread post)?

Edit -  and do any, hopefully all, of them have an up to date meter reading from your Smart or given by yourself ?

I'm interested in the fact you assume that it is British Gas who are the culprits.

I moved from them to Octopus a couple of years ago because of their dreadful billing system (which is very similar to what the OP is experiencing). They eventually sorted out the bills (I was in credit) but only after I switched.

I have an open mind -  the only thing we know is that BG failed to credit the account of the OP. But BG don't help when they give three different invoices do they ?

Like the previous poster where are you seeing BG in the OP?

While it does sound like something BG would do, other co's can also do the same.

So perhaps Poster could confirm just which company they are talking about 👍

The B Gas system has been swapped over and caused issues for the unlucky.

As your DDs missed that might have been the issue.

If like SGas I assume you only spotted on your annual summary.

The only statements they might send if like SGas.

And don't log in to download their more regular statements (my company emails me monthly, sister with S Gas has to log in and download quarterly still despite on new system and paying monthly DD).

You really ought yo try to make the effort to log in and download / check more often - a year can be a lot of cash going awol.

Backbilling rules are a bit complicated - but unlikely to apply unless the complaint was for use over 12m before the first erroneous bill payment due  iirc.  And again only stops thrm adding new units - not rebilling for old when reworking bills with a long running error (like lots of estimated readings playing catch up when finally submit a reading andcso rippl8ng back over several months orvquarterly statements).

Again if quarterly statements available on line that could fe ovef a year ago.

The credit / debit can change as they add or subtract months or quarters billing for usage.

I'd check the actual meter reads are close enough to current.

And over the period all credits have been caught.

Without seeing the actual bills (meter serial nos, supply numbers and personal name address etc - details redacted impossible to say.

And for gas worth checking the unit conversion.  1 m3 should be c11kWh - sadly the new system has defaulted some to old 1=100ft3 = 32kW so been overbilling them too.

    Apologies - I shouldn't have assumed BG

    Hopefully OP will be back

I'd suspect it's British Gas or Spanish Scottish Power.  They both have form...
  • I checked my direct debits every month on the British Gas app. All my readings were actual readings sent in by me and then since November were read from my smart meter.

OP, you need to work out what you should have paid, take off what you have paid, and see what's the difference?

(kwH of electricity multiplied by your price) + daily charge - payments made. Do the same for your gas. If you have your start and end readings for the year, that should be fairly easy. You'll need to convert units to kwH (your bill will show you how they do that, or use an online calculator).

Or post the figures on here and someone may do it for you. Otherwise, we're all just guessing.

Did you move over to their new accounts system drumming this period ?

My B In Law lost over £1000 in credit for several weeks in the change - took best part of 3 wks after noticing on statement to recover.

Your account number changes when do so I believe but cannot remember details.
