I would love to try this but not a lot of storage space. Firelighters? They are super expensive in my local shop, so I buy a load when I'm in the big town's independent diy shop. Candles?6

Thanks, @Pixie_Cosmo. We are short of candles. Only got those big scented ones, left DD3 when she left home. Will get some now, before we have more power cuts. Firelighters we never use. I have an old spray bottle that I fill with cooking oil. Quick spray of the wood and kindling before lighting the fire. Works a treat. Hugs, mumtoomany.xxFrugal Living Challenge 2025.9

@Auntycaz, we have a huge supply of medical stuff, relatives who work in the NHS. A lot of it is past it's use by dates. But not really a problem with bandages or plasters. Good call though, thanks.
@MayDogsandCoffee, I think most things cost the same here, south Wales, as elsewhere. The only thing more expensive is alcohol. (Due to the different alcohol laws, minimum unit price.) I've only just realised this, after over 12 years. We drink very little. But I will be buying a couple of boxes of cans of lager, for OH, next time we go to England.

Do you do home baking? You might want to add some dried fruit and chocolate/cocoa and vanilla essence to your list if you do.Sealed Pot Challenge no 035.

As you've got plenty of room, do you have a nice cool outbuilding where you could set up a vegetable clamp? That would certainly help store cheap veg, or veg you've grown, for a longer period - especially over the winter period. That could cover potatoes (if you're quick), carrots, parsnip, beetroot, turnips, swede, sweet potato, kohl rabid, Jerusalem artichokes....
As you grow your own, how about going all-out on veg for drying? Beans dry brilliantly, keep for ages, and are far cheaper than buying even dried/tinned beans. Scarlet emperor runner beans make it great alternative to kidney beans, I use Cobra French bean seeds instead of black beans, and I have a very rare variety of heritage beans that look like a rounder cannelini bean but taste quite similar to potatoes! Chillies are also great for drying, and all manner of herbs.
Could also switch your kitchen roll for an old towel cut into squares. Reusable loads of times, and friendlier for the environment as well as your wallet 😊

@RipleyG ive never heard of Veg Clamping but ive just spent the last hour and more looking into it and watching videos. Ive since discovered that there is a growing / gardening club about a 10 mins drive from my house who i intend to join to learn the art of growing, storing, cooking food and improving my own food security ---> thanks7
