Buying from Auction advice - non receipt of goods

hi all, not sure where the best place to find help on this matter so reaching out here for advice.
I have purchased a car at auction, that was supposed to come with an additional full set of wheels.
The car was ready on collection, but no wheels. I was advised this would be sorted. After chasing an a month later, and the auction company saying 'trying to get hold of the seller, will all be resolved' I have chased again.
The auctioneers have now said they have no responsibility to resolve this and i can speak to seller directly for resolution and claim via a solicitor. Their wording included "it is important to note that as ‘agents’ in the sale, we can only contact and request cooperation from the seller to a certain extent. Ultimately, we have no authority to compel a response or enforce fulfilment if they choose not to engage further."
Does anyone know if what the auctionneer is saying is fully correct in that they have no role in resolving?
Thanks in anticipation

Without seeing their full conditions of sale, it's hard to be sure, but - yes - very probably.

I presume this isn't a "traditional" real-world auction where the car was actually on the auctioneer's property? So they've only ever had the vendor's word to go on that the wheels existed and would be included.

The time for claims like that is before you have completed the collection of the car and removed it from site (be it an offsite location or the auctioneer's premises). If you look through the T&Cs you may very well find something like "as is, where is" included as a term, which means what it sounds like it means. So you can interpret promises like "it will come with an additional set of wheels" as meaningless, unless the wheels are actually in the car (or pictured in the car, if it was an online internet auction). Being polite and submitting a claim before it was taken away would normally not incur additional storage while its being resolved.
