EDF Smart meter delays
I want to get a smart meter installed. My energy supplier (EDF) has me on their waiting list. But it cannot tell me either when this will happen, or even a date for a date when it will happen!!
I am advised (by ano supplier) that I must go through my current energy supplier.
Is it true that I must go through my existing energy supplier?
What can I do to get a smart meter installed?

Yes, only your current supplier can install a smart meter. You can change your current supplier, then ask the new one to install a smart meter, you may then experience a longer, shorter or most likely the same wait to have a smart meter installed.arnieyule said:I want to get a smart meter installed. Wait. There appears to be another shortage of meter supplies, the suppliers can only buy the meters from government approved manufacturers and they seem to be having supply chain issues again. There are also still shortages of installation engineers and they are not trying to focus on different areas at a time, I know for example there is currently a big push in Reading and Oxford, but less in the surrounding areas, as it is a lot easier to install ten on the same street than having 30-60 minutes drive between each installation.arnieyule said:What can I do to get a smart meter installed?

I waited 12 months for mine from Octopus; they just didn't have them available. You just have to wait1

I got mine last week with EDF - live in North West. There was a very limited number of slots & you cannot book more than 6 weeks ahead. My installation engineer said he was kept busy as there was no shortage of meters, just not enough installers or time slots to go round. I got wise to them putting new time slots online every day but for just the specific date 6 weeks ahead & they went very quickly. But then I realised they updated very early in the morning, set my alarm for 5am, checked & got a slot that had just appeared.
I was on a waiting list but my DIY stance paid off. Don't hang around on a list - it might not be you who gets the next available slot. Do the search yourself. Good luck.0 -
EDF let me down on three occasions in the past after chasing ME for dates for installs. they always gave me enough notice that they didn't have to pay "missed appointment" penalties.
When I dug deeper ,I found that it was a a classic case of drainpipe management. - their central operations were desperately chasing appointments to avoid fines from OFGEM - but the local contractors had either no meters or no staff to actually carry out installs !0
