OK thank you all, am I understanding this correctly. I should hold off doing anything with the phone until I've signed up to a new provider and receive a sim card from them. Now for the really stupid questions. Do I put the new sim card in the phone and then charge it? Will I immediately get instructions on how to update the phone, is this the most important first action I should do?
I would set up the phone prior to putting any SIM in it. You can charge it as soon as you like, no need for a SIM. The phone should let you know if there is a software update available as soon as you connect to the internet, via Wifi.
Absolutely this, no need for a SIM to set the phone up.
Just make sure you have your Google account info and WiFi password before starting up the phone. After entering your Google account it'll pretty much set itself up with gmail, the Google Play Store etc. Check Settings for software update to Android.
It's worth changing settings so that updates etc. only take place over WiFI to avoid consuming your (future) SIM's data-tariff
Phone updated, it was less scary to do once flaneurs-lobster mentioned it was like a tablet. I'm back looking for more advice as tomorrow is D-Day when I put in my new Sim. What security apps should I
use (preferably free) and is there anything on the phone itself that I should turn on/off
to make it more secure.
