I came across this on a gov uk website and it’s not something I’ve ever heard about before, so sharing as I thought it was interesting.

I can almost imagine the mainframe coders at some Govt office setting up their batch processes to efficiently manage all these payments in the 70s/80s and it never being changed since!

If it still exists then - one day mine will be paid on Fridays…

When you're paid

The basic State Pension is usually paid every 4 weeks into an account of your choice.

The day your pension is paid depends on your National Insurance number.

Last 2 digits of your National Insurance numberDay your State Pension gets paid
00 to 19Monday
20 to 39Tuesday
40 to 59Wednesday
60 to 79Thursday
80 to 99Friday

It wasn't so much trying to relieve the strain on the mainframe gears, more spreading the load on the Post Offices where OAPs would queue to collect the cash.

(do I remember taking my Gran's book to the PO to collect it for her? Was that allowed? Or was it the Child Benefit?)

    Hahaha

The last comment couldn’t be further from the truth,  thats why I spend so much time laughing at the wealthy worrying about their funds  and trying to make every £ count

Does it matter what day you get it, as long as you get it?

Yes you were allowed to collect on behalf of someone else as long as they had authorised you to collect. Oddly I recall Thursday being the day the bulk of pension payments were made when I worked in a main Post Office as we always had to make sure we had enough cash on to cover the payments out

Those days are only fully correct for new state pensioners.  They are mostly correct for basic state pensioners but...  If you have deferred your pension they are not correct & if you have inherited some from a spouse they are not correct.  A family member inherited some & was paid on Friday not Thursday & I deferred and am paid on Friday not Wednesday.  This doesn't happen now as new state pensioners can be paid part weeks which didn't happen with the basic state pension.

It's handy that me and Lady Q are on sufficiently different days that we'll never both have a five week month at the same time.
  • Slightly off topic but I am soon to be receiving my state pension. I found out, from this forum, that it is possible to get your pension paid weekly and that is what I have asked for. I would find it much easier to manage my money if I get it weekly but I will have to wait and see if it actually happens!
