All they need to do is tell the Tax Credit Office (TCO) the date they stopped being single. They will recalculate the single claim and send out the demand for the repayment of the monies which were overpaid. They won't be in any trouble as people regularly "forget" to advise the TCO of changes in their circumstances within the prescribed time limit. Plus it's better they come clean rather than risk TCO finding out themselves and accuse them of fraud.

Note however they won't be able to backdate any joint claim to the date that they became part of a couple.

  • Would It Be Ok To Tell Them Now As The Claim Was From 05-06 . Just Want It All To Go Away And To Pay Every Thing Back

TCO can be contacted anytime regarding errors, changes etc.

Spinks - An overpayment of £3600 can arise very easily depending on the number of children on the claim, household income and whether there had been any entitlement to disability elements of tax credits.

  • Thanks Pam.

The Yearly Award Was For £7200.

Tax Credits Were Contacted Due To Several Overpayments Due To Computer Recalculating And The Fact That They Had Put A Childcare At £6000 Instead Of £60. This Was Noticed Straight Away!
  • Wht Is The Best Way To Approach The Tax Credits Office. Is It Best To Pay For Someone In The Know To Do It For You.
