cd rom drive problem

i am advised today by my pc shop that the drive does not load my cd due to a software problem,its not likely to be my drive i am told when pressed.
Now where in the software do i look as i am uncertain where to go next with this

when i load the cd into drive green light flickers then goes off after 30 seconds,nowt happens after that,in my computer no drive shows for cd or dvd ,very weird0
