Egg - general info some may find useful/interesting

in Credit cards
I've looked at these forums (the MSE forums in general, not specifically the credit card one) many times before but never really felt the need to post as usually by the time I’ve read a question its already been answered by someone else.
Anyway, I work for Egg and just thought I would post some general information that people may find useful or interesting. Some of it will impact directly on customers and some of it won’t.
Please note that I obviously won’t be posting anything confidential and where any views/opinions are stated these are my own personal views/opinions and nothing more.
1. Egg have always stated in their T&Cs that if you go over the credit limit or don’t make a payment they might withdraw any introductory or special offer. Previously, they never did this and any offer stayed on the account. As from now, this has changed. Even if it’s only one missed payment, or you go over the credit limit just once then any offer will be withdrawn and interest will be charged. They will notify customers of this with a message on their statement. As far as I am personally aware no separate message will be sent, so unless people check their statement they won’t be aware of it (a lot don’t check their statements and freely admit it).
2. The guinea pigs will be no more. As from 1st Jan 2008 Egg’s advertisements will feature a dolphin named Raoul. He’s a real dolphin doing tricks (jumping through a big ring to promote the 15 months 0% interest on BTs). The advert looks to be a bit more sophisticated than the guinea pigs.
3. I’ve not seen this news posted elsewhere on this site but Egg have ‘proposed’ to make 350 staff redundant at the Dudley office. Until around 9 months ago nearly all secure messages were answered by staff at Dudley, since then some staff at the Derby office have been trained to use the secure message system so now it’s no longer just one office that deals with these. Also part of this proposal is to close the Citi office at Manchester.
This news was announced around 1 month ago and Egg/Citi said there would be a 90 day ‘consultation period’ so staff at Dudley will know their fate around mid February I presume (I don’t know the exact date). Most of these jobs will be moved to the Derby office, but travelling will no doubt be a problem for most staff so I’d guess that it will be new employees filling the positions when they become available at the Derby office.
Considering the time needed to train staff on how to use the systems it will probably have an effect on both call waiting times and secure message waiting times (my own opinion). Like any other jobs, people not only need to learn how to use systems but there is a lot of knowledge that is built up over time which new employees obviously won’t be aware of when they initially start.
Egg/Citi have mentioned that if staff are made redundant at the Dudley office (my own opinion is this is almost certain and is looking more and more likely every day) then the proposed date will be 1st March 2008.
Maybe some staff at the Dudley office won’t want to wait around to see if they’re made redundant; maybe some will leave beforehand to ensure they remain in employment. As 1st March 2008 draws nearer and eventually passes, if any of you out there experiences delays then maybe what I’ve written here will explain why.
I’m sure that the vast majority of those staff that are left and the new ones taken on will be working as quickly as they/we can.

Pretty much your whole post is what Egg would consider confidential information.0 -

It's not, everything I said there is information available out in public.
1. Egg is just now deciding to enforce their T&Cs, in fact if you do any balance transfer over the phone you're always told that you will lose your offer if you don't pay or you go over your limit.
2. The adverts will be on TV shortly (may have already been on).
3. The potential job losses were well publicised locally (front page of at least one local/regional newspaper). The bit about training new staff is what I'd consider to be common sense and could easily be applied to any other company out there.0 -
I take you personally arn't affected by the cuts-people being made redundant are not generally enthused about the company they work for lol.
However ive always found Egg pretty good on customer service, especially on-line money management so i hope that isn't affected.
Its simple enough to make sure you dont miss payments-set up a DD for the minimum amount.0 -
Thanks for your info on Egg. I love Egg and have always been pleased with the customer service, so hope it won't change too much. Nothing to do with me, but wouldn't people be better waiting for the redundancy pay, rather than going early?
Apart from that, could I ask you a question, please? I took out the Egg Credit Card over a year ago but have never used it at all, could I still ask for a (15-month) 0% balance transfer on it? (Anniversary would have been October 2007, so I know that doesn't apply for a while).
I use my Egg Money card for every day use.
Also, do you have any news about the cashback - will Egg be keeping the £200 cashback limit, now that they are Citi?
Finally, obviously there will be huge disruption for Egg employees, and I just want to wish you all, all the very best.

I suppose it's down to personal situations. I only said maybe because I don't know what people's plans are. There may be some that won't be legally entitled to redundancy pay, I'm not an expert on redundancy so I don't know the ins and outs. I've heard that the company may give everyone affected at least a certain amount, but from what I know that isn't something that is in writing so a job offer elsewhere may be enough for some people to go.
You won't automatically be entitled to any offer so I doubt you'd get anything, even if you haven't used your card. Although I have seen in the past that introductory offers have been extended when there's been no use (not recently though as far as I'm aware). You could always just ask them if there's any offer on your card. If you want the introductory offer you'd need to close the Egg Card and then wait 12 months before you could reapply and then you'd get whatever offer is available when you apply.
No idea about the cash back sorry, we haven't been told of any changes so I presume it's staying as is for the time being.
And many thanks, the ones directly affected have it the worst but it will no doubt impact upon everyone else in the company in some way or another.0
