Have they checked the meter serial number against the one on the bill?
Can they carry out Gerry1's meter sanity test?
what is the point of the sanity test other than to prove the meter is only working for their property?  It's a detached property so can't see how there would be anyone else hooked up to the meter.  And the serial number matches.

Do they have a water meter so they could also check normal water usage to rule out a hot water leak?

Turning everything off and seeing no movement/increase shows you don't have a parasitic load.
Applying a known load and counting the flashes gives an indication of accuracy.

    here's the bill

    Offpeak
    opening 11755.461
    closing 12947.344

    1191.883 kwh at 18.63p  £222.05

    Peak
    opening 12426.435
    closing 13663.949

    1237.514kwh at 27.79p £343.91

    standing charge 31 days at 67.47p a day £20.92

    cost of electricity  £586.88

5% vat brings the total to £616.22

all readings state that they are off the smart meter.  so no estimates.

Still thinking it's the immersion heater that's to blame.
Not necessarily the immersion by itself.

With economy 7, you would expect the peak use to be in the ballpark of around 20-33% of overall use.     However, she is using 51% peak.   An economy 7 tariff where you are using 51% would make it more expensive than a single rate tariff.

So, either she is on the wrong tariff or the devices that are meant to use off-peak rates (e.g. heating and water) are using peak rates.

Plus, she is a very high user.  So, that suggests electric heating but using peak rates timings for a lot of it rather than off peak.

For reference, I use nearly the same amount of electricity, circa 61 per day for an EV, electric AGA and other devices  and have a 78% off peak use and last month, my bill was £188.94.  The same bill at standard rates would have been around £570.

Urban myth.  As an ex-DNO engineer never came across it - connections to the incoming cable - yes.

This will boil down to (lack of) control of heating, poor insulation ....................
