Replacing cables on up and over single Cardale Garage Door.

20 year old manual up and over single Cardale garage door.

I opened the door the other day, heard an unusual noise and saw a cable fly out from one side. I managed to manoeuvre the door closed again but it clearly needs rapairing.

I have phoned around local companies for a price to repair the cable.

One company quoted me (over the phone) £100 to replace both cables. They advised that I replace both cables and that appears to be sensible advice as the other could be on the point of snapping as well. I am unsure if that is plus VAT.

Another company insisted on visiting before quoting. Their 'engineer' came today, had a quick look and confirmed that replacing the cables would fix the problem. He said he would get a price for that from his office. A minute later his office phoned me.

£248 plus VAT.

I politely declined.

Is £100 a reasonable and sensible price? I am near Chichester in West Sussex.

Comment and advice please.

Thanks

Not a job for the faint-hearted, as it involves cables tensioned by very powerful springs. Perfectly doable by a competent DIYer, but not one for a beginner - as it's hard to progress your DIYing skills when you are missing a number of fingers.
£100 to supply and fit a pair of cables? Bite their hand off - after they've done the job.
A no-brainer. Assuming they have a decent reputation.
Once the job is done and you are happy, add some lovely comments on their Fb and other review sites

Cardale Garage Door Cables Cones Safelift Anti Drop wires is worth a look.   Parts are as cheap as chips.

I got their 'how to' sheets for my Cardale door in the last house we had.  Fitting Instructions for a broken garage doors, garage door spares, garage door repairs, UK.

The skill in installing and adjustment is what you pay a "person who can" for.

    £100 is ludicrously cheap.

It is very reasonable, yes. But for a one-person band, it's a nice job; £10 for the cables, and less than an hour to sort.
But, yes, due diligence required - what is the provider's repute on FB and elsewhere, for example? And, are any other parts faulty?
I recently paid to have 3-storey-high gutters completely vacuumed clean, and that included a build-up that had taken root. The guy used one of the loooong sucky tubes with a camera on top. £40. A no-brainer.

I had one cable snapped a couple of years ago and I replaced it with the help of a neighbour. Pretty straight forward and took about half an hour, would probably be much quicker to do the second cable now we've sussed it.

No problem doing one cable, but if you're paying someone to come out and fix it you might as well get both done at the same time to save on the labour costs. £100 sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Thanks everyone for your comments and advice.

I am a competent DIYer but these days, at the age of 72, I prefer to pay a professional to do most jobs.

The company that have quoted £100 are a local family run business that have been going for many years and appear to get good reviews.

I will give them the job. £100 (or £120 if VAT is added, I forgot to ask)  appears to be very reasonable and I am happy to pay that.

Yesterday I phoned the company quoting £100.

They said they could come today, Thursday, sometime after 2:00, as they would be on their way back from another job a few miles away.

At 2:10 they phoned to say they would be with me in 10 minutes. Two men arrived in ten minutes, replaced the cables and showed me the door working properly.

A good professional job and well worth £100.

If anyone in my area of Chichester in West Sussex needs a garage door or a garage door repairing I can recommend AW Garage Doors & Repairs.

    Thanks everyone.

Perfect result, and worthy of further good reviews.
  • Also if the garage door has a big spring across the top of the door similar to Henderson Garage Doors spray some releasing fluid on the whole spring as what happens is it gets rust between some of the coils which slows the door down ,most people re-adjust the tensioner in the middle of the spring and then when the rust falls off the doors flies up and creases the door panel .
