Recently discovered various share certificates from a deceased family member.  How do I check the companies are still valid and how do I sell these shares after probate ?

Which ones are they? Are they very obscure? If they’re obvious household names you can call the registrar to ask.

If valid you have the registrar sell them (usually expensive) or transfer them into a new name and sell them via a cheaper stockbroker.

The problem with share certificates is that people often don’t throw them away when they’re defunct e.g., the company’s been bought for cash and the cheque was received and cashed but they then don’t throw the certificate away.
