Lots of discussion about taxing EVs early to avoid paying for another year but I've just taxed our Peugeot 108 1.0l petrol that is due to rise from free to £20 tomorrow following the same instructions as the EV discussions.
Tax was due in July so dodged 9 months of payment 😁

  • Got to wonder why it will be cheaper to tax a petrol car than an EV.

Got to wonder why it will be cheaper to tax a petrol car than an EV.

    On average it won't be.

Pre 2001 petrol/diesel cars pay either £220 or £360 depending on engine size (obviously more than £195)
Between 2001 - 2017 they pay between £20 and £750 depending on fuel consumption.

HMRC could have made a blanket ruling that all cars should pay £195, but someone did the sums and realised that overall they would lose money, so they left everything pre-2017 as it was (except they raised the zero band to £20 and removed the £10 discount for alternative fuels to rake in a bit more cash)

So some petrol & diesel cars will be cheaper- (bands A-D) but most won't be.
    (Pre-2017 EVs are now £20)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
