Totally stupid question: How do we get our two single accounts to a joint under the switching scheme

The easiest way would just be to open a new joint account and switch your single ones into that. If you open one with Monzo or Starling it wouldn't take more than about ten minutes to do everything.

We don't know whether this is the easiest, as OP said they had a lot of DDs on their RBS account, and a mortgage with RBS (?).

Whilst CASS deals with the transfer of DDs and SOs, you still have to monitor yourself that everything gets moved properly. We also don't know whether the RBS current account is required for the mortgage, or whether the RBS account is used as a nominated account on savings accounts. CASS does not deal with changes to nominated accounts. I have done dozens of switches myself but only ever switched spare accounts and would feel uneasy having my main account with gazillions [sic] of DDs switched, despite the switch guarantee.

It's also not easiest to set up an entirely new banking relationship when it's actually not necessary to do so, and when the OP and the fiance might have their hands full with wedding preparations.
  • I suppose the other thing for the OP and fiance to consider is whether they really want or need their 35 aggregate direct debits being paid from their joint account.

Joint accounts, from what I have seen from forums, tend to usually be used for the bills that they wish to share and to which each deposit a proportion of their income into each payday, allowing the financial independence of their own personal accounts and sole commitments.

I know the OP says they do have other sole personal accounts, however, I just wonder if reviewing their DDs could reduce the number that may be beneficial to move manually.

    Just a thought.

The only time I ever had a joint account, my then wife thought it was for me to deposit in to and for her to withdraw from! 🤦😂

I'm not experienced in this area, but is there a reason why so many people are claiming opening a new joint account then both switching into it is "easier" than changing her account to a joint account and then he switches into that?

That doesn't make any sense to me, but maybe I'm missing something?

I'm basing my comments on my own experience. My wife and I wanted to change a. Halifax account she had into joint names but they wanted us to go to all the cost and hassle of messing around going to a branch. With Monzo we had a new joint account set up from scratch and a switch set up in less than 10 minutes.

Get the fella to CASS to a new sole RBS.

When this is done, open a joint account.

Once this is done then both of you can individually request RBS switch your direct debits from the sole accounts to the joint.  You can be selective in what DD’s or just go the whole hog.

Whilst not as easy it’s a way around it.

Either that or you just find the hour it would take to manually switch your 20-30 direct debits.  I know everyone is busy but the time you have taken on here you could have probably done it, by now.

Thats not a dig, just a fact.  If it’s important to you as this seems to be, you have to find the time.

Either way, you’ll get it sorted.  Joint account have always been more difficult.

    Good luck!

Are you planning on changing your name after marriage? Might save a bunch of admin if you wait until after the wedding to set up new accounts.

Bizarrely I added my wife to two sole accounts i had at different financial institutions, both times while adding my wife's name they somehow managed to change the spelling of my surname (but get the spelling right for my wife.)
Neither involved a visit to a branch though, just confirming identity.

Rbs are apparently telling them they can't add his name to her account to make it joint.
