Non Fault claim - How long before at Fault Insurer Makes Contact

Options
I need to make a non fault claim, I have been advised that the at fault party has been in contact with their insurer, what should I do now? How long should I expect to wait to be contacted?

You should get in contact with your insurer to advise them of the accident as a minimum.

Are you planning to have the claim dealt with by the 3rd party rather than your own insurer and you understand what rights you give up in going that route?

I have contacted my insurance company and notified them.

I am considering having the claim dealt with by the at fault party's insurer directly and was wondering roughly how long it takes for them to get in touch and generally what the process is

There is nothing to stop you contacting them.

Some motor insurers will not have builders or things like that on contract.

You may be better off getting quotes ready to be prepared. There is also the issue that motor insurance will put you back in the position you were in prior to the accident which means not brand new fencing if if it’s brand new you may be expected to make a contribution. And you give up rights re complaints

personally I wouldn’t have a motor insurers look after a claim for garden fencing but I am aware people like to avoid claiming in their own policy

Depends on the insurer... some would have contacted you even before the third party left the scene, others will never contact you as it's up to the claimant to make the first move. There are arguments for both strategies but the ones for being proactive are much stronger when the non-faulty party is a motor vehicle rather than a wall.

Remember claiming from their insurance it is indemnity only, not new for old, and they are only liable for the damage their client caused not the rest of the wall etc. Plus if you are unhappy with them the resolution is court not the ombudsman

I believe they are motor insurers only, but I am concerned that by claiming on my home insurance the renewal price will increase even though they should be able to reclaim the costs. Could I ask what your reservations are?

mainly less protection but motor claims handlers get trained in motor claims, their system and suppliers are all set up for motor.

The incident is now on record anyway
it does sound like a straight forward claim you insurers can make a recovery from the motor insurers, let them deal with it.
At the end of the day its what you pay them for.

I’m having a difficult time getting new car insurance quotes due to an unresolved claim last year when a driver went into me. I’m so stressed at this as my renewal price was £804 and I’m getting prices of £357 from compare sites until they know about the outstanding claim!

That doesnt make sense? You dont get prices until you have finished the quote so the only way that can be true is if you are quoting stating that you have not made any claims. This then opens up a new issue as changing a key fact that is immutable is a big red flag on the fraud watchlist. Some insurers will spike your premiums because you're making yourself look untrustworthy.

You have to declare you have made a claim when you come to renew whether you went through your insurer or the 3rd party. So either way the impact on the building renewal will be pretty much the same.
