Take out an annual policy and then renew in a year?

how much is the deposit and when is the balance due?
Although it is often suggested to take insurance as soon as booking this is to cover any financial loss you may incur due to cancellation. I booked a package holiday for my elderly parents last year and could cancel with just loss of deposit up to 60 days before and just lose the deposit. As the deposit was less than the cost of the insurance we did not take the insurance until 61 days before the trip and they paid the balance.
the way we looked at it was no insurance and cancel before 60 days = loss £120
    insurance cost £420
take insurance at time of booking and cancel before 60 days = loss £300+ (cost of policy and any excess less deposit return)
I have had holidays booked in the past with refundable hotels and flexible (airmiles) flights and not taken insurance until just before travel as there would have been no financial loss had I needed to cancel. I would have lost more if I had to cancel...cost of policy.
When you have a large amount at stake...pay non-refundable balance then it is when it is really important.

I agree with @Caz3121. Assuming you have just paid a small deposit then just self insure. It might be cheaper than having to purchase 1+ years of travel insurance - and then having an excess on top of that.  Just make sure that you have insurance in place when it comes to the final payment.

Have paid £600 so far , the rest not till sept26. Was going to pay an amount each money but since can’t get insurance till prob next year , I will put money into a saving account for the year , then take insurance when paying final balance .
    thanks for reply and info.

No No No!!  Get insurance as soon as the window opens for you to do so - do not wait until you pay the balance.

We have no idea what is going to happen to us before then so take Martin's advice Insure when you book - or in your case at the first opportunity that you can?

(As an afterthought do you not have a bank account with Travel Insurance as part of the package?)

Not even a single trip policy? Think I would go for that if I booked more than a year ahead.

You need to buy 1 policy now from April 2025~April 2026, to cover cancellation risk.
Then another policy from April 2026-April 2027 to cover cancellation risk and risks associated with the trip itself.

I just did a Google search and came up with this - can't comment on what premium they would charge you.
