IHT402 Question

I am executor for an elderly relative who died recently. Currently filling out IHT402 to transfer his wife’s NRB to use (She died in 2014).

I have found her will, written in 2000. She left all her estate to him, but she also gave £30k in cash split between the grandchildren and a couple of antiques for friends too (no idea of value? Or where to start finding. Not in any paperwork I’ve got for her).

My question is do I list these in box 13? It’s thrown me a little as the will mentions the cash gifts as being I quote “pecuniary legacies, free of inheritance tax” so I’m just doubting myself do I need to list these. I assume I do. But just would like confirmation.

Thanks in advance! This is just the start of the forms I am tackling and feel like I’m falling at the first hurdle!

Yes, you're right to include the £30k pecuniary legacies in box 13 of IHT402.

The point about them being "free of IHT" simply confirms that IHT was due on the estate rather than the donee. So they used part of the wife's NRB and reduce her transferable NRB accordingly.

Unless we are talking about potentially very valuable items I would just go with a nominal value for the antiques. Something like £100 each should be fine.
