Am i reading it right that RAC and Adrian Flux have both said you have 9 years?

Yes, you are reading it right.  But with Adrian Flux it was a phone call and she had to ask a supervisor.  I wasn't confident that she fully understood what I meant (most likely because I didn't explain it clearly to be fair).  And with RAC, although it was live chat I wasn't left feeling all that confident either.  I - like I'm sure many others - have been told one thing on the phone only to later find out I was given the wrong information.  With some companies you get a different answer every time you ask a different person.

But besides all that, RAC and AF quotes are quite hefty.  Comparative new quotes are similar if I say I have 0 NCD.  But they get a lot cheaper if I say I have 9 NCD (and, of course, I'll then still have it in subsequent years).  So knowing what RAC will do RE my NCD if I decide to cancel and leave seems quite important.

That's not to say I'm not over-complicating and over-thinking it - I have tendency to do that!  In fact, it feels about as natural as breathing :)   So I do appreciate your replies.  Many thanks

You are massively overcomplicating this.  You had 9 years in Oct 2024.  You still have 9 years.
The issue is the fact that if RAC simply return the prior proof of NCD because its only been a few months that NCD is dated 2022 and so most insurers won't accept it any more because its over 2 years old.

On the plus side - RAC are saying that my NCD will remain as 9 years if I choose to leave.  That's a relief.  So an afternoon of new quotes methinks!

On the downside, I knew they charged a £45 cancellation fee, but I've just been told they charge an additional £45 ISF (intermediary services fee).  Couldn't believe that!  So I'd get virtually nothing back for the six months left on the policy.  Bl00dy insurance!

Both RAC and Adrian Flux have said the OP has 9 years.  Take a policy with either if them for a year   - sorted.

Certainly one option, but if they will provide a new NCD thats issued "today" then the OP has stated shopping around is showing much lower prices with 9 years NCD than either of the above are offering.

Bit of a moot point now as it seems RAC have confirmed they'll issue a new NCD cert so the OP is free to move (well not fee free as their is a cancellation fee)

But if I did that it might be a far more expensive policy than the competitors, which would go against the money saving ethos of this website :)

UPDATE:  Plus what @DullGreyGuy has just added

Just popping back to confirm that upon cancellation I received an email from RAC stating I had 9 years NCD.  So all good.  My new insurer is one that checks some kind of database for proof of NCD (so I don't have to send proof) and that was all good too.

    My NCD is preserved!!

Still gutted I got charged £90 by RAC to cancel, but there we are!

Thanks for all the help in this thread, much appreciated
