How old fashioned is your SLR & do you have a selection of lenses for it? You may well be able to fit them to a dSLR body.
Following on from the mirrorless posting, adapting old lenses to mirrorless is dead easy, no need for matching fittings because adaptors are readily available for around £20
That way you can use any maker's lenses if the fancy takes you

You would lose EXIF data & autofocus, but I find the manual use of Focus peaking is very easy, unless of course it's sport or fast moving subjects

It's certainly possible to but the new RF lenses are generally smaller and lighter than the equivalent EF lens (there are some exceptions, looking at you RF 85mm 1.2L). Given you are combining it with what is now also a lighter and smaller camera body the balance is better with RF lenses

Thank you for all your advice. I'm going to check out MPB and the others and the lenses I have to see if compatible and then make a decision from there. I may give my bridge camera to my daughter who has a year abroad and then see how I get on and whether a flash in a pan hobby or want to invest more. really helpful hearing what people have done and about the new cameras and lens - much appreciated!
