I’m not needing my sky tv , broadband and internet and phone as I’m working away. Could I end the  contract and re sign up when I return with the proviso of reserving my same landline number ?

No, but you could port the number to a VOIP provider, pay their low monthly fee on the number and then decide if you want to use VOIP, you'll be able to receive calls anywhere in the world for free during the time, or port it back to a landline provider

I doubt porting it back from a VOIP provider to a physical landline will be possible later on, it is no longer possible to get a new POTS provision from Openreach.

    Presumably in a residential circumstance?

That said in most cases these days all phones are going VOIP so its not really a physical landline these days but a voip to voip transfer if you decide you want your home phone from the same company as your broadband

I have a VoIP set up via a grand stream adapter and a lan connection.

No need for a traditional landline.

It's also possible to use software like zoiper to take VoIP calls on your mobile phone
