Err, not quite. Lots of ISP, inc. BT themselves, are offering services on different tariffs etc.but the basic infrastructure is all from BT Wholesale. At a guess the BT Wholesale kit in the exchange is configured to 'recognise' the login credentials from the different ISP and then route the IP traffic on the 'back haul' network to that ISP. So long as your login credentials can be validated, you can use an unbundled line - if it wasn't all automated the economics wouldn't stack up for BT Wholesale.

So why do we need a MAC from BT if they dont have to do anything as the username and password will determine who you connect to???

Could be because BT Wholesale get to charge £11.75 plus VAT for each migration? Kerching!

I thought broadband providers now can't legally charge for migration only for new connections, in the same way they have a min. time period to provide a MAC when requested.

Providers can't legally charge for a MAC but BTw charge £11.75 + VAT per migration as amcluesent says.
Lot of ISPs pay this for you but claw it back if you leave within a set period of time - Newnet for one does if you leave within 12 months of migrating.
