British Gas Historical Debt
Hi,
Just want to check where I stand from those who know more.
We were looking to switch and discovered yy mother in law (just her in a 2 bed terraced house), had a debt with British Gas of £650.
I've had a look back through her bills and it seems this has been lingering since her Nov-22 to May-23 bill with Bills and DDs roughly matching off since then.
Each bill says they 'regularly review the DD to make sure you're on track'. In the last 2 years they've never changed the DD to cover this historical debt but assume they have to cover ongoing price changes hence why the debt stayed similar over the 2 years.
Are there any options here or do we just need to find the money to pay the old debt?
I did come across something about billing issues around 2023 with British Gas but unsure where to look in to this more?

An opening couple of thoughts
Gas or Electric ?
Have your MILs meters been changed in recent years - there will be a sticker on the meter with old and new details.
Could you list dates and readings please from say early 2022 - particularly note the letters A (for Actual) and E (Estimated) - may also be S, our read, your read.
Visits from meter readers are rare and the system (unless Smart) relies on the consumer for accurate data.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
