Sending cash to family via PayPal with HSBC credit card - treated as cash advance?

I've seen the Barclaycard warning for over a year but it's not been treated as cash (last time was in Feb, so not sure if they've actually changed it recently)Fingerbobs said:Fingerbobs said:It varies by card, but I've never been charged any cash advance fees on my Barclaycard when sending money to Friends and Family.
If I select my Santander card to pay with, a warning pops up that the card may charge fees for the transaction. This warning doesn't appear when I select Barclaycard as the source.
UPDATE: As of April 2025, the cash warning now appears against my Barclaycard in the PayPal app, and indeed Barclaycard have now started treating PayPal F&F transactions as Cash Advances.
When the warning started appearing against Barclaycard at the beginning of this month, I took a calculated hit and sent the payment anyway, and it was indeed treated as cash, for the first time ever.
What was the amount sent and how much did you get charged?0 -
The main reason used to be to get free (no fees) cash from a credit card.sausage_time said:Is there any reason to use PayPal for F&F? Seems to me that Faster Payments and the likes of Wise are better suited.
If it's a debit card, an e-mail address is easier to use than a 14-digit combination.1 -
2.99% (min. £2.99) plus the interest from day one - as per the T&C.SamDude said:Fingerbobs said:SamDude said:

In my case, I had a need to send the payments to family members anyway, so using a credit card to send the money for no additional charges was a no-brainer. Now PayPal is no longer free, I've switched to using direct Faster Payments.grumpy_codger said:

I was charged the minimum £2.99 fee as the payment was <£100, but I have just received the monthly statement containing the transaction, and for some reason I have not been charged any interest at all.grumpy_codger said:

Is there a way to send money from your Barclaycard to avoid the new F&F PayPal cash advance charges, using wise ? I need to do this and I have a Wise accountsausage_time said:Is there any reason to use PayPal for F&F? Seems to me that Faster Payments and the likes of Wise are better suited.
