TRAVEL INSURANCE - PRE EXISTING CONDITIONS,STAYSURE.

My wife and I have travel insurance with Staysure for several years. We are both 70 yrs old and have declared pre-existing conditions from the day of joining Staysure. All are minor conditions, being managed, and Staysure have always accepted them.

Recently, my wife had a blood test, and her haemoglobin was noted as being slightly raised. She has been referred to the NHS for a further blood test to see what is raising the haemoglobin. Her GP has stated she is fit to travel, and that the haemoglobin is only slightly raised.

I recorded this with Staysure , as she has been referred for further test. Staysure have now struck out any cover for her declared pre-existing conditions, and any issues that might relate to her pre-exisiting conditions while she is awaiting her next blood test.

Is this reasonable considering that her GP states that she is fine to travel, and that there is no diagnosis relating to her raised haemoglobin at this point in time?

It seems a very draconian reaction to a yet undiagnosed condition.

Can members recommend other travel insurers that take a more reasonable approach to this sort of issue?

As 70 years olds, it is likely that, at any point in time, one of us will be waiting on some test or referral to the NHS.

All help welcomed!

Insurers dont like uncertainty, many won't insure you at all if you have an undiagnosed condition that is still being investigated. It becomes very hard to deal with a claim for medical assistance as it could be a sign of a lung or heart condition but also could be that she was just dehydrated on the day of the test.

It's the fact that the cause hasn't yet been identified that the insurer doesn't like.  Striking out all cover for pre-existing conditions does seem harsh, but that is a decision for the insurer to make.

Many people have raised this on Trustpilot Staysure reviews. And I do not use them any more.

(I haven't tested the others out.... but Staysure's position seems very clear, in these Reviews at the bottom.)

Another two are       AllClear      and      Insure and Go.

I hope you can get new Cover very soon.

(I can't remember which Insurer this was. About 7 years ago, I had to have checks and I had a big Holiday booked to take place within 3 months. They allowed me to get all the results back and then reinstated all the Policy once there was a Definite Diagnosis. And so I was thrilled to be able to go on the holiday. Can you do something like that with Staysure?)

       ================

The answer of Staysure is always this:       (Note the "All in or All out"!)

Thank you for your review, I am sorry you are unhappy with your recent encounter with Staysure.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today, it was appreciated. There are times when a traveller is awaiting a procedure or test results, no matter how minor, where our underwriters have taken the decision to exclude all pre-existing medical conditions. This is due to the fact that they are unable to determine how the current medical circumstance with your condition is or will be affecting your other declared pre-existing conditions. It also means they are unable to determine the level of cover that would be required on your travel insurance policy in relation to this condition.

As all of these medical circumstances can affect the cover on your policy, our underwriters take an 'all in' or 'all out' approach in order to ensure that our customers fully understand what is and is not covered on their travel insurance. We do understand it is frustrating, especially if you feel that the procedure/tests you are awaiting is a minor one.

Once again, please accept my sincere apologies for the inconvenience and any frustration caused.

I only used Staysure once.  After our policy was taken out my wife was sent for a breast scan and biopsy.  Result came back negative but I phoned Staysure as the policy stated I must.  No increase in policy cost (why would there be), but that will be £20 to update the record.  I was on the phone for little more than a minute.
