Changing private reg on car
I’m getting a new car in a few months and will be putting my private reg on it. So obviously I have to take my private reg off my current car that I am selling via motorway. Only issue is, my current car has only ever had my private reg on it so once I’ve filled out the forms regarding retaining the private reg I’m unsure of what reg would have to put onto it when I sell it.
Can anyone help?

When you remove your current registration and put it on retention you will be allocated an age/region appropriate number and certificate so you can get new plates made and fitted.1

How long does that usually take? I’m still waiting for a date as to when I can pick up my new car so trying to time it right with putting my current car up for sale on motorway.Ayr_Rage said:When you remove your current registration and put it on retention you will be allocated an age/region appropriate number and certificate so you can get new plates made and fitted.0 -

https://www.personalisedvehicleregistration.service.gov.uk/retain/vehicle-lookup
you can only use the service during office hours and they should issue the new number to put on your car
many will say wait and let the dealer do it but i always prefer to do mine myself ahead of trade in0 -
Minutes, you can do it online, read the gov.uk site
The new V5C and retention certificate arrived in 3 days last time I did it.
