I think they can tax the car online when you go to pick it up

It seems you have to have valid insurance for a vehicle before you can tax it, so they would need your insurance details.

He doesn't need to see your insurance details, that is whether you got points for speeding or whether your mother-in-law is a named driver.
But the online system checks that the car is insured before it will let him buy the tax, and it is an offence for a dealer to allow you to drive it away untaxed.

The normal process is that you tell your present insurer the date when you are due to pick up the new car and they arrange your policy to cover the both cars on that date, so that when the DVSA computer checks for insurance it confirms that you have cover and allows the dealer to purchase the tax.

Yes, they don't need the details as they online tax system looks up to check the insurance is in place. So it does need to have insurance already in place.

Some dealers won't let you leave the premises without seeing you insurance details, but thats a different topic.

Having recently just done this, last month, the Dealers had no need to see the actual Certificate we had with us.

However our Insurers were covering both vehicles for the handover date... so the 'new to us' vehicle would show as insured on the electronic database.

Five and a half years previous the Dealer wanted the paper insurance details to tax the vehicle.

However, I'd recommend asking the Dealer/Salesperson to be certain!

Just bought a vehicle and no insurance details needed.  Transfer of registered keeper and VED both done online at the dealership.  The only reason we needed to be there was to authorise the card payment for VED.
