Grass cuttings as mulch

Just scarified and raked the lawn and have a big pile of cuttings.  No other treatment since autumn so wondering if I can use them as mulch.

I think it is ok provided you only apply a very thin layer - thick layers of grass cuttings just go grotty and dry or slimy and don't really help much

I scatter them loosely, as above just a thin layer not occluding the soil completely. The couple of months where the lawn grows very quickly I put about half on the garden and half on the compost heap. The rest of the time it just goes straight on the garden, it dries out over a few days

Yes, you can use it as mulch, you can go to a few inches thick, and it will look awful as it dries out though :) And the top layers will take time to disappear. Or stick it in the compost with cardboard in layers...

I used a lot of mowings as mulch up my allotment, where having weed-free soil that was protected against rain damage was far more important than what it looked like.  Also good over a layer of carboard around potatoes - means you don't have to earth up.

Maybe it's where you live and weather dependent.
I found it was just a soggy mess that never got taken into the soil.
Also it will be a lot of nitrogen if it does. It's means more leaf and fewer flowers.
But I do put a small amount into the compost heap every now and again

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Just enough that the birds rummage and throw it around works here and looks fine, more than that as you say forms a soggy, silage smelly, mess.
