So today I had 2 attempts to purchase pizza in Canada one after another for £35 and £39
both were declined I had this happen previously in transaction in New York about 9 months ago card was cancelled and new one sent out.

My question I've never used this card or used it online so how would they have got the card details?

It happens occasionally, sometimes because of fraud and sometimes because of errors.

A few months ago I had a charge on one of my cards for a smallish dollar amount for a toll bridge in Washington State. The next day a credit was applied. The credit was 6p more than the debit, presumably because of varying exchange rates. It was presumably a processing error.

A few days ago Halifax contacted my wife saying that had rejected an attempted debit of about £90 asking her to confirm whether or not it was her. It wasn't her so they cancelled her card and sent her a new one a few days later.

    That was presumably attempted fraud.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

Purchases made over the phone & the card was either misread or misheard.  Be grateful it wasn't the $3000 like mine & took 6 months to sort.  I don't know about Canada but a lot of America seems to be still working on very old manually transferred systems.
