You can get comfortable padded office chairs on castors.

I'd raise the sofa or whatever has been used previously to a suitable height instead.

The best solution is probably to ditch or store an armchair and have a suitable high riser chair in its place, plus the dining chair in the other position.

May be a decent gaming chair if he needs to move to different areas, you can adjust the height and theres 2 arms to help getting in/out.   You can buy glides that fit into the sockets where the wheels normally go which are more suitable for thicker carpet.

If has to be the dining chair you may be able to find large glides (amazon?) that have a dip to accomodate the teflon studs. There will still be marks, they'll be bigger not as intense but they are still going to be visible.  I have quite big castors on my office chair (I weight about 10 stone + the chair weight) and the marks do not completely vacuum out of a medium cut pile carpet.

Yes, you can buy furniture raisers which fit under the armchair legs, or they are sometimes provided free under the NHS. You need an Occupational therapist assessment which might also identify other aids such as grab rails which could be useful.

I wonder if the size of pads/feet you'll need to add to a dining chair might be so large as to start causing other issues before they actually protect the carpet adequately? If so then an alternative approach might be to put some kind of mat/floor protector under the area where the chair goes. This sort of thing is often done where a desk chair is positioned on a carpet, e.g., Office Chair Mats - Under Desk Mats & Carpet Protectors

The chair raisers mentioned above also sound useful, as a means of making the existing comfy furniture usable.

I think I have found the solution in the shape of a large, square piece of board with a glossy melamine facing which slides easily over the carpet. What's called 'furniture board'. The dining chair simply stands on top.

My thanks to all who replied.

Do be aware of the trip hazzard of the board, especially as those with back or hip issues often dont lift their feet high enough.  Also if one chair leg slides off the board it may tilt.

I have to say I echo the trip concern. You'd be better with one of the hard (thinner) desk chair floor protectors mats which are much flatter and shouldn't pose a hazard.

Wheelchair? Or 2 dining chairs so you don't have to move one? Indents on the carpet are unavoidable really, it just depends what shape and size indent you want.
