Don't replace it (with the same antic syphone).

Replace it with a compatible modern flash valve.

I agree. The problem is that people call a plumber in to fix the toilet, and the plumber has no real interest in making the next repair straightforward. 

Flush valves also wear out, but I don’t know of one that can be replaced without dismantling the toilet.

The flapper on the turbo88 is easy to change.

Can recommend this one -> https://www.screwfix.com/p/viva-skylo-3-part-dual-flush-siphon-215mm/284hr as long as you have a lever operated flush.

Fitted one to my toilet recently, and now it is adjusted to my satisfaction, everything gets flushed first time.

Many come with a dual-flash button that replaces the existing lever.
