Cover for old gas meter box

Hi

I have an old gas meter box outside where the door is damaged as are the hinges. I know you can buy replacements but it looks hard for me to do and I struggled to find anyone willing to fit it.

I bought some plastic sheet and thought I could somehow cover it but struggling how to attach so I remove it for meter readings.

Any ideas?!

    Thanks for photies.
Think if you scrape out the recess in box and trim your plastic sheet to fit inside, then fix with Gaffer Tape, might not look too good and a nuisance to get meter reading, unless you cut a wee window to allow you to see the digits and tape over that, and just peel back when wanting a reading.

Cut the sheet to fit into the recess.
Fix it there with two easily removable nails (mid-height). In fact one can be permanent, e.g. a screw

Even better - get a smart meter (it's free) and you'll hardly ever need to see it.

Pull it forward at the bottom, then lift up. They are (generally) just hanging off a bracket at the top of the box. Once you have the old one off, the new one should just drop in.
Word of warning - The design has changed a little over the years, so you need to get a replacement of the same type.

I'd just get a piece of plywood cut to size, paint as desired, then either bracket and latch as above, or 4 rotatable catches 2 on each long side to hold it in place. Flip the catches to remove when needed. Smart meter is a good call but at our old house, the outside gas meter couldn't communicate with the indoor leccy meter so it was a dumb smart meter and had to manual readings anyway.
