Debit card fraud USA

Hi. My son has been contacted by HSBC to say that his debit card details have been used to try and make a purchase in the USA!
The bank has cancelled his card and are issuing him with a new one but, out of interest, does anyone know how this could have happened?
He's not been to the USA.
Also, does he need to be concerned that his account is now compromised?

The card details were compromised, and they can be used to try making purchases anywhere in the world (except, probably, Russia where Visa and Mastercard don't work currently)

Does his online account show this transaction?

It's possible the telephone call was Fraudulent

Does not mean that a physical card was used in US.

Card details can be compromised anywhere the card is used be that in a shop on the street, or a internet retailer.

No need to be worried about the account. 👍

Hi Penners. The amount was "pending" when the bank contacted him.

If it was blocked then it wouldn't show.
