We were advised that most people need less than 3 years residential care, but one person in that age group I know has been there 6 years already.
My maternal Nan went in a care home the month before her 91st bday (she had dementia) and died there 8 years later shortly before her 99th bday.

I'm on my way to visit someone in a care home today. They are fast approaching the 4 year anniversary.

Acedotal evidence suggests women last longer than men but I don't know if there's any empirical data to back that up. Having spent most of the last 8 years with loved ones in nursing homes and me visiting either multiple times a week or daily, depending on the situation, this sort of feels like my new specialist subject.
