I have never done this before and need advice regarding opening a junior isa and stock & share account with the 8k to invest.
what proportion should I consider and with who.

How old is the child? If very young I would put it all in a S&S JISA.1

Two providers of S&S JISA offer them with zero platform fee, so these are usually recommended.
HL or Fidelity.
The investments you choose within the JISA will still have their own charge as normal.0 -
