Digital TV and VCR

I have just bought a new digital tv with built-in freeview.
My VCR is a few years old and when i try to record a freeview channel (via AV2),I`m unable to watch an analogue channel, because if I change the channel on the tv,this also changes it on the vcr.
I can record an analogue on the VCR ok (via AV2) and watch a digital but not the other way round.
Also, if I start to record a digital channel and then turn the tv to standby the vcr doesn`t record anything.
Any help appreciated.

alared, I would say that you can record an analogue channel on the VCR only because the VCR has it's own analogue tuner, therefore it is recording it directly via it's own tuner.
You cannot record a digital program via AV2 unless you have the TV tuned into the channel you want to record, as the VCR is then simply recording what-ever is being output on AV2 i.e. what-ever channel analogue or digitasl that you have the TV tuned into.
The only way you will be able to record a seperate Digital channel on your VCR to the one you are watching is to buy a digital VCR or a seperate set-top box for your VCR.

I still have my old set top box,how do you suggest I set this up with my new TV.
At the moment,I just have the TV and the VCR set up.
I have the aerial going into the VCR and a cable coming from the VCR to the TV and also a scart lead going from the TV (av 2) to the VCR.0 -
Just in addition to the advice above, regarding recording digital when you don't have the TV on. Depending on the features of your TV, most allow you to set a recording timer using the EPG (on screen electronic programme guide), then you leave the TV in standby, it'll turn on (but only the tuner, not the screen) and transmit the digital which can be picked up by the VCR, but you will need to set the date, time and external channel (AV2 on yours) to record it correctly.0

Just put the set top box in between video and TV.
So RF into VCR, then from VCR into set top box, then from set top box to TV ( assuming your set top box has RF in and out)
After that connect the set top box to the VCR by scart,0
