    With hindsight, would the best course of action have been to contact the credit card company, dispute the second £3,300 charge and ask them to suspend it with no interest accruing it until the refund was processed?

    That is what I would have done before I moved money from a savings account although I don't know how this particular credit card company might have responded.

    OP could have simply rang MBNA  Credit card co, about this & they could have sorted it. Rather than taking money from a savings acc to pay the bill.
