I'm just going to add my agreement to this, with the extra point that you may not need to use their services every year - if you have a Ltd Company it's generally strongly advised to do so. I am working on the assumption that however 'daft' your initial question may have been - your words not ours! - and however frustrated we may seem when you haven't 'got' the answers posted here, you have a reasonable amount of intelligence, and will, over time, get to grips with this. But to me it makes sense to spend your time on what YOU enjoy and are good at, and choose to pay others who hopefully enjoy doing things you are NOT good at.

Every hour you spend trying to work out how to do your accounts and how much tax you should be setting aside is an hour in which you are not earning. Even if an accountant charges twice your hourly rate for what they do, they shouldn't need to spend as much time as you do to get the right answer to you, and you should be able to rely on their answers, ie you can sue the pants off them if they get it wrong!

  • If you know you know...if you've been self employed for several years you will know. If you are an accountant or in finance you will know. If you've been employed most of your life, then become self employed then you won't. I said my initial question was daft, but I really don't feel stupid in not grasping it. There is just no simple answers to my questions out there (until I had them answered on here)...Thank you all.

I actually have an accountant. I wanted to know for myself how it all works. And how much I am really making, and if I should just reluctantly go back to being an employee. I've found I did ok for the  year up to this April, the 12 months before I was working for peanuts
