The transition from income tax reporting for your mother's estate , to what you now need to do personally, maybe a little vague if you did not provide HMRC with a defined date for the completion of estate administration period.

Thank you, yes this is the first time ever that I will need to complete it.
In their letter they have not given any explanation why.
I think it is because the amount of interest on savings has risen significantly, following my inheriting of Mum's savings last year, and they are not able to tax all of it via the tax code.
Last week I received the tax code notice, and then afterwards the letter about self assessment0 -
Really, if you've earned so much interest that you need to complete a tax return I'd have thought you have enough money to be able to buy a mobile phone even if you only ever use it to receive texts from HMRC.2

Register for Self Assessment if you're not self-employed - Check how to register for Self Assessment - GOV.UK
then when it comes to the tax return itself, use paper & snail mail

Question 1- You can send a paper return, though we would need to make sure that you are registered to file a return for that year.

Do I still need to register to file a return for the year I require, even though they have already written to say they have created a personal tax account for me, and they have given me a Unique Transaction Reference ( UTR ) number on that letter ?0
