Obtaining Named Driver NCD.

Options
Having done a search on the forum I realise that this question has been asked before, but not for a long time, and the insurance world may have changed since it was last asked. My question relates to someone who has been a named driver on someone else's policy for many years but has not had a policy in their own name for many years. The policyholder on whose inurance they have been a named driver has a full NCD.

The named driver will shortly need to have a policy in their own name and I am aware that some insurance companies will (or might) give some NCD to a named driver but there seems to be no easy way of finding which ones offer this. Would it be a good idea to use a broker? If so, does anyone have any recommendations for a good broker please?

It is likely only to be the current company  giving named driver cover that might give some NCB.

That does not mean another company may give cheaper cover without any NCB.

They typically only give ND NCD for years that they have been insured on a policy with them so were you to start a policy with Sainsburys, for example, only after 1 more year would you have 1 years NDNCD. They also try and make it so that no one else will accept ND NCD thus creating lock in.

Why are they needing their own policy now? Just increasing the number of vehicles or is the current main driver no longer able to drive for some reason?

NCD is rarely the 70% discount it used to be, most insurers also give an introductory discount to those with 0 NCD but otherwise a good risk (you dont ask for it, won't see it named, just happens automatically in the rating engine). Some have found that their maximum NCD can be worth less than £5/year or less if they get NCD Protection.

In case anyone looks at this in the future, the outcome was that the insurance for the driver with no NCD came out £50 pa cheaper than for the dirver with full NCD (for the same car at the same address). The only difference was in their ages: the one with no NCD is middle aged and ther other is 80. Adding on a named driver (a 75 year-old with a clean licence) didn't reduce the premium (in fact it increased it slightly).
