Hello all
my son stays at my address and has been bankrupt in the past. when I was searching new home insurance quotes the site asked if anyone had been bankrupt staying at the address.
its my house that I own and I don’t have debt. Why would it matter? And do you know if this is bankrupt now or in the past as there wording wasn’t great. Comparison site was MoneySupermarket
thanks

Fairly clear you should answer yes  - he has been bankrupt and stays at the address

Please read and confirm the following statements are true

You and the people you live with:

    • Have no unspent convictions or pending prosecutions
    • Have not been declared bankrupt
    • Have never had insurance cancelled, refused, voided or had special terms given by your insurer

If any of these statements are incorrect you should get a quote from one of our specialist insurers here and not progress with this quote.

    I agree it's imprecisely worded.

Maybe the actual insurer will word the question better when you go on their site.

Why moneysupermarket would be so interested in one form of insolvency but oblivious to the others makes no sense.

Home insurance covers all persons living in the home, so if your son lives there at times he needs to be declared along with his bankruptcy.

Ultimately it doesn't matter "why" the insurer is asking, if they ask you must answer honestly. The FOS is lettered with cases where people have had their insurance void around the bankruptcy question and the FOS side with the insurer for avoiding the claim.

You dont get declared unbankrupt so whilst it discharges you have still been declared bankrupt so have to answer yes.

Is that the answer from a comparison site?

Each insurer could view it differently

    Have just checked confused.com
Have you or anyone living in the property been declared bankrupt or had a County Court Judgement (CCJ) or Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA)

    What was the situation?
    Bankruptcy
    County Court Judgement
    Individual Voluntary Agreement

    What was the reason?
    Declared Bankrupt
    County Court Judgement
    Individual Voluntary Agreement

    Date

Which seems more reasonable than the OP's insurers response or past is not ok but current is all good.

this could come back to bite them

The bankruptcy added an extra 100 to the quote when current and £95 when discharged
