Don't rely on Halifax Clarity card out of the EU

You only need to authorise payments for online transactions. Surely better to ensure your regular sim card is in the phone and you're on a WiFi network before buying things online?0

I actually had this in Belgium with my Halifax Debit card last month and I had to keep phoning up to unblock my card. I did wonder if it was because I was using the card rather than applepay which I normally use for all my transactions. My company’s PTS/ATOL numbers are 6266/12759. MSE doesn't check my status as a Travel Agent, so you need to take my word for it. ATOL numbers can be checked with the Civil Aviation Authority. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Travel Agent Code of Conduct.0

Very rarely do I have any issues with my Halifax Clarity card anywhere in the world. Less than any other credit card I have as backups.
Saying that, its good these issues get raised as it does then get others posting their experiences which as we see here thankfully shows the OP's experience to be an outlier. No less frustrating for them, but not a systemic problem.
I do try to make payments on the card via Google Pay, and certainly for the first few transactions. But not had issues with in contactless or chip and pin.0
