Hi

My insurance company are digging into my employment declaration as a painter (after they cancelled my policy). They have asked me for invoices to convince them of my employment. I'm looking for advise on how to deal with the insurer's questions please.

I do not have invoices and report my earnings ad-hoc to Universal Credit (my partner is the main earner in the household). When it comes to work in the last 12 months, I have completed several jobs for a local business as and when needed. I'm looking for advise on how to deal with the insurer's questions please.
Why do you not produce invoices for these jobs? Especially if for local business.
While you may be reporting to DWP for UC, are these declared to HMRC for tax purposes?
Are DWP aware that you are self employed?

This is the other thread, and it is likely just on the info that it might be connected, so perhaps OP can clarify.

As born_again says , there must be some proof of payment received even if the total remains below the £1000 trading allowance, anything on a headed paper showing what money was paid for (ie type of work) would probably do.

I take it you mean you are self employed, so if you don’t have invoices how about your business insurance, your business tax affairs, any purchase invoices where you have bought materials, or don’t you have any of those things either?

What did you initially put but down as your employment when taking out the insurance?
If you put down painter but your income is from UC - your main occupation is unemployed

You can ask the local business for any paperwork as proof, but ultimately you fighting against the tide.

The claim that has caused this situation. Is it definitely a non fault claim - straightforward with little chance of the other side being able to dispute?  ie you were parked and they drove your car

The other side have accepted responsibility, I'm due to be paid out. Policy cancellation is my main concern.

I'm pleased you have been paid out but the initial question still stands. If you stated you were a self employed painter/handyman (or whatever) then assuming that is the case you must have some sort of proof of income if only business liability insurance or payment for goods or materials.  What are you declaring to HMRC for instance? If as I mentioned above it is below the £1000 trading allowance and therefore not being declared , then is is actually a self employment at all for the purposes of declaring yourself as such to an insurance company? Do you see the issue.

If you can show by any means that you are self employed in line with your declaration when you took out the policy, even if it is just your tax return submission then you have a good argument to go back to insurance co and argue the case. If you can't prove you are self employed, then it might be harder to get the cancellation overturned.
