Insulation grants

I have had 2 separate friends turned down for insulation grants even though they clearly qualify. Both were completely turned down as the work required would cost more than the installation companies can claim back. They werent even given the chance to fund the difference. Is there anything they can do?

With whom did they apply, local council or energy supplier for example?

And what form of insulation was being proposed ?
Loft insulation is cheap and easy to install yourself if you're reasonably mobile.
Plugging all those nasty cold draughts is also low cost, but it can be difficult to pinpoint some.
Internal & external wall insulation is expensive, and requires good attention to detailing around windows, doors, downpipes, and roof line (not so critical with internal). It is expensive, and in my experience, doesn't save a huge amount - Have insulated some of the walls internally here, and whilst there is a difference, I barely measure it (have sensors scattered around the house recording the data). Also have cavity wall insulation, and that made absolutely no difference after it was installed...
If you've got £10-15K to spend on thermal upgrades, replacing old doors & windows with high performance double glazing will have a bigger impact.  But unless you have single glazed windows, you are unlikely to find any grants to cover the work.

My local council have recently put in a bid for HUG (home upgrade grant) funding for the next financial year. At the moment, they are collecting names & addresses, and expect to start accepting applications in April. Might be worth contacting your local council to see what funding they have in the pipeline.

How are your sensors monitoring heat flow?

Have temperature sensors in all rooms. Two bedrooms of very similar size (as are the windows), one has wall insulation, the other doesn't. Overnight, the difference in temperature drop is minimal.
