This isn't great news. I'm in the exact same boat with BG and was planning to move to Octopus. I did phone Octopus earlier today, was told I may wait longer as I'm not a customer, was connected to an agent in under 3 minutes.
A lot of people have failed to understand there are many hoops to go through when a customer leaves and the final credit return and in fact most don't realise just take out the credit before you initiate a switch is the best option if on DD.
As others have said just ask to be put on variable monthly direct debit once switched over and all will be good.2 -

Refunds with Octopus can also be requested online in a few clicks to arrive back in your bank account within days, assuming no issues. Octopus may impose some limits on this requiring an amount of credit to stay on the account, but they do also offer variable direct debit as discussed above.
If you do switch to Octopus remember to also claim the £50 referral credit, which can also be done in minutes through the online account after the switch. If you don’t know anyone already with Octopus to use their referral code, there are plenty to be found online through a quick Google search (forum rules prohibit them from being shared here).Moo…1
